DEPARTMENT OF TURKISH STUDIES DOCTORATE PROGRAM
Objective: The aim of the Doctoral Program in Turkish Studies is to train scholars in the field of Turkology, who can investigate and examine the language, literature, history, art, and folkloric richness of Turkish culture and civilization along with its relations with the neighboring cultural world, and thereby generate knowledge in the same field.
Scope: The Turkish Studies Doctorate Program covers the field of Turkology in general, and provides interdisciplinary research opportunities. The curriculum includes courses related to the Turkish Language, Turkish Literature, Turkish History, and Turkish Art.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Knowledge
Graduates will have a basic understanding of the concepts and theories related to the language, literature, history, art, and folklore richness of Turkish culture and civilization, based on the qualifications obtained in their Master's degree.
They will have a scientific knowledge of the developments in Turkish Studies around the world.
Graduates will learn ways to access information in order to conduct research that contributes to their field. They will also recognize local and foreign sources of knowledge in their field in order to develop their advanced institutional and applied knowledge.
2. Skill
Graduates will be able to follow and interpret scientific developments and information in the field of Turkology.
They will examine studies related to their field with a scientific and systematic approach and identify valuable products that will be transferred to future generations.
Graduates will also research and investigate an original topic related to Turkish Studies and turn their findings into a scientific study.
3. Attitude, Behavior and Professional Competencies
Graduates will carry out comprehensive and up-to-date theoretical and practical studies in the field of Turkology.
They will acquire proficiency in at least one foreign language that contributes to their work in their field along with their native language.
They will be able to evaluate the Turkic world as a whole and share their knowledge through national and international publications.
They will participate in national or international projects by establishing cultural relations with the Turkic world.
They will use the necessary information and communication technologies to access and transform data into scientific knowledge.
Application Requirements:
Having graduated from a Master's degree program
Having a GPA of at least 60 out of 100 for undergraduate studies, and at least 70 out of 100 for graduate studies
Obtaining at least 65 points from ALES (or at least 530 from GMAT, at least 650 from the old GRE or at least 151 from the new GRE)
Obtaining at least 55 points from YDS and YÖKDİL (or obtaining sufficient scores from other exams accepted by ÖSYM)
Registration: Applications are made online and as final registration to the Social Sciences Institute according to the academic calendar determined by the Istanbul University Social Sciences Institute after the application announcement is made.
Courses: It is obligatory to take at least 24 credits of courses to graduate from the Doctorate Program. Students who have graduated from a program other than Turkish Language and Literature, History, and Art History are subject to a 1-year scientific preparation. After the Scientific Preparation, they take elective courses from the department they want to study along with compulsory courses during the normal course period. In order to graduate, students are required to successfully complete the Seminar and Scientific Research Techniques and Publication Ethics courses. The program lasts for 8 semesters and a maximum of 4 semester extensions can be granted.

- To be able to carry out a study that requires expertise in the field of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language independently.
- Takes the lead in solving the problems encountered in the field of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language.
- Evaluates the knowledge and skills acquired in the field of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language with a critical approach.
- Transfer current developments in the field of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language and their own studies to various groups in written, oral and visual form by supporting them with quantitative and qualitative data.
- Uses information and communication technologies related to the field at an advanced level.
- Uses the knowledge, problem solving and/or application skills acquired in the field of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language in interdisciplinary studies.
- Graduating from a bachelor’s program
- Having taken the Ales exam and received sufficient point.
- Having taken one of the Foreign Language exams YDS/YÖKDİL or whose equivalence has been accepted by YÖK and having obtained sufficient score.
- Entering the interview conducted by the Department Minimum admission scores and weights are determined within the framework of the Istanbul University Graduate Education and Training Regulations and the conditions determined by the Senate.
- Based on doctorate degree qualifications, it develops current and advanced knowledge in the field of Turkish as a foreign language education at the level of expertise with original thinking and research and reaches original definitions that will bring innovation to science.
- Approaches new information in the field of Turkish education as a foreign language in a systematic way and conducts advanced research in its field.
- Contributes to the field of Turkish education as a foreign language with an original study that brings innovation to science, develops a new scientific method, or applies a well-known method to an area.
- Gain high-level skills in using research methods in studies related to Turkish education as a foreign language
- Expands the boundaries of knowledge in its field by publishing scientific articles about Turkish as a foreign language education in national or international peer-reviewed journals.
- Develops and implements effective teaching strategies to provide students with knowledge and skills related to their field.
- Creates solutions to social, scientific and ethical issues related to Turkish education as a foreign language and supports the development of these values at the national and international level.
- Be able to develop new thoughts and methods related to Turkish education as a foreign language by using high-level mental processes such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making.

DEPARTMENT OF TURKISH STUDIES SCIENTIFIC PREPARATION PROGRAM
The duration of the scientific preparation program is a maximum of two semesters. This period is not counted as part of the postgraduate program. Periods exceeding two semesters are counted as the maximum education period.
The Scientific preparation courses cannot replace the courses that must be taken in master's and doctoral programs.
Those who successfully complete the courses are eligible to start the regular courses of the diploma program they were accepted to at the end of one year.
ADMISSION OF STUDENTS TO GRADUATE PROGRAMS FROM ABROAD QUOTAS
The application requirements for the master's and doctoral programs of the Department of Turcology Studies from abroad quota are as follows (Online Application Requirements):
1. Candidates must be foreign nationals or Turkish citizens residing abroad.
2. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in order to apply to master's programs; in order to apply to doctoral programs, they must have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree with thesis or graduate from a program that gives bachelor's and master's degrees together.
3. Graduation Requirement: Candidates applying to the master's program must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 65 out of 100; Candidates applying to the doctoral program must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 65 and a master's grade point average of at least 75.
4. Foreign Language Requirement: No foreign language score is required from the candidates.
5. Reference letters from at least two academicians who have scientific studies in the field in which the candidate is applying must be scanned and uploaded to the student automation system during the application. 1) Letters of reference must be obtained from academicians with a title who have studies and qualifications in the field of application, both in Turkey and abroad. 2) The reference letter must be signed and legible and must indicate the name and institution of the academic.
6. Evaluation Criteria: The letters of reference of the candidates whose letters of reference are evaluated by the commission determined by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School; 50% of the undergraduate grade point average and 50% of the oral interview grade for admission to master's programs; 25% of the undergraduate grade point average, 25% of the master's grade point average and 50% of the oral interview grade for admission to doctorate / proficiency in art programs. In determining the priority among candidates with equal evaluation grades, the candidate with the most recent graduation date is preferred, and in case of continued equality, the candidate with the earlier application date is preferred.
Registration: Candidates who are eligible for final registration must submit the required documents to the Institute of Social Sciences within the period announced in the application guide.
